Places you can visit in a short car ride away
A short 10 minute ride by car will bring you to the old mountain town of Mijas. Aside from enjoying the many shops and tourist sites, be sure to walk through the Parque La Muralla and see the breathtaking views of the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Visit here to plan your day.
A 15-minute ride by car will bring you to this lively beach town where you can swim or walk for kilometers on the beach or enjoy one of the many restaurants or tourist shops. Within a few blocks in from the beach you will reach the city center (Plaza de la Constitucion) with additional restaurants and some good inexpensive shopping.
In a 30-minute car ride, you can reach the bustling beautiful city of Malaga. You can visit the Malaga Cathedral, the Roman Theater, Alcazaba, catch the beautiful views from Gibralfaro Castle, enjoy some tapas at one of the many outdoor restaurants, and much more. Quick places you can visit in a short car ride away
A 15-minute ride by car will bring you to the Butterfly Park and the directly opposite Stupa de Benalmadena. You can walk amongst more than 1,500 exotic butterflies from around the world, flying freely in a tropical paradise between waterfalls and flowers. It seems to truly enchant people. Crossing the street you can enjoy a beautiful view out towards the sea and sit in the serene energy field of the tallest Buddhist Stupa in Europe, a project of Lopoen Tsechu Rinpoche.
Great places to visit generally within a couple of hours
In just about 2 hours by car, you can reach the magical walled city of Alhambra in Grenada. You will need to get tickets well in advance, especially during the high tourist season. You can also book a tour which includes the ticket price. Here a sweet little coffee shop. Be sure to include a stroll up the cobblestone alleys to shop and enjoy some delicious Moroccan food or venture farther up to see Alhambra during sunset from Mirador de San Nicolás.
An hour-and-a-half-long winding car ride through the mountains will get you to the mystical old town of Ronda. A Tip: You definitely do not want to miss the view of the bull ring and the surrounding area from this wonderful hotel rooftop restaurant. Worth going up to take a picture even if you don't want to stay for a drink. Visit here to plan your day.
An hour-and-a-half car ride south will get you to the Rock of Gibraltar. You will need your passport for this one. Best to park in one of the parking areas on the Avenida Principe de Asturias. Before the border control and the last parking area, so closest, is Aparcamiento Santa Barbara. Easiest to take the short bus ride into the city and towards the cable car up to the top once you get through passport control. For ideas visit here.
Within an hour car ride you will experience this nearly 8km walk over 100 meters up on a sheer cliff face. The Caminito del Rey route is spectacular from beginning to end, running through cliffs, canyons, and a large valley. A gorge carved out by the river Guadalhorce, with walls 700 meters high. If you use the north entrance you will find a tunnel to get to the starting point for the Caminito. Its just a few hundred meters north of the "Gratis Parking" area. For more info click here.
El Torcal is about 30 minutes away by car. It is located between the city of Antequera and the municipality of Villanueva de la Concepción. Strolling around El Torcal is like taking a journey into the past, as its rock formations are the result of processes that took place several hundred million years ago.
Located about an hour car ride away, in the historic region of La Axarquía, Nerja is a bright town on the Málaga coast which has a beautiful sea front formed by beaches, coves and cliffs. Its historic quarter has examples of popular architecture, with lovely walks and spots to visit such as the Balcón de Europa, a splendid viewpoint over the sea, and the Caves of Nerja.
Between the Mountain of Cádiz and the South Mountain of Seville, just over a 2 hour car ride, you can find the Sierra Greenway. It passes through the old Jerez-Almargen railway line. Currently, there are nearly 37 km accessible, connecting the towns of Puerto Serrano and Olvera. You can walk, BIKE RIDE, ride horse and even go on a donkey. Rental bikes are readily available with good tips from Backpack Adventures.
In less than a 2 hour car ride, you will enter the Hundidero-Gato Complex, in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Reserve. This impressive geological formation consists of several caves as part of a single underground system with a trail that is more than 4 km long. This spot has become one of the mythical places in the world of Spanish caving.
In an hour-and-a-half car ride from Mijas, or 25 minutes from Ronda, you will reach Setenil de las Bodegas. Named after its once flourishing wineries - bodegas - Setenil is probably unique among the pueblos blancos, white villages, of Andalucia. Where most pueblos blancos were built on protective bluffs and pinnacles, this town grew out of a network of caves in the cliffs above the rio Trejo north-west of Ronda. Its blinding white houses seem to emerge from the rocks.
More places to visit a little farther away
Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, you can get to this breezy quaint little town in just over an hour and a half car ride. You can walk the path to get a photo with the Atlantic/Mediterranean sign or enjoy the rocky baths or beach. There is a Fort museum and the center of town has cobblestone streets with restaurants and shops. You can include Tarifa as a day trip or perhaps catch a ferry from there to Morocco. A short drive past Tarifa will bring you to small beaches on the Atlantic.

A two-and-a-half-hour car ride will let you explore this beautiful larger city. There are plenty of things to do. It is very worthwhile staying overnight.
